STEAM and Design Thinking

At Roy Cloud School, innovation is woven into the fabric of teaching and learning. Rather than limiting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) to a single classroom or subject, we integrate DesignThinking across all grade levels and disciplines, empowering students to become creative problem-solvers, critical thinkers, and compassionate leaders.

Our DesignThinking program is rooted in a human-centered approach to learning. Students are encouraged to develop empathy, ask meaningful questions, collaborate with others, generate creative ideas, build prototypes, test solutions, and reflect on their learning. Through this iterative process, students discover that mistakes are valuable opportunities for growth and that the best solutions often come through curiosity, perseverance, and collaboration. 

Beginning in Transitional Kindergarten and continuing through 8th grade, students engage in authentic, hands-on learning experiences connected to real-world challenges. Whether designing solutions to improve their school community, engineering structures, creating artistic innovations, exploring scientific phenomena, or using technology to solve problems, students learn by doing while applying academic content in meaningful ways.

Our educators partner with the local DesignThinking experts to continue building instructional practices that foster creativity, innovation, and learner agency. Through ongoing professional learning, teachers design engaging experiences that encourage students to think deeply, take intellectual risks, and develop the confidence to tackle complex challenges.
